Speech and Language Support for Children
Speech and language support at Ability Rehab is provided through our paediatric speech pathology services, tailored to support toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children. Our goal is to support your child in developing clear, confident communication skills across a variety of areas, helping them to thrive both socially and academically.
Speech Clarity
If your child has difficulties producing specific sounds or is hard to understand, they may have a speech disorder. It’s important to seek help from a speech pathologist if your child:
- Sounds immature for their age or uses only a few speech sounds
- Has difficulty pronouncing words appropriate for their age
- Gets frustrated or upset when not understood
- Stutters or has hearing loss
We evaluate speech clarity and fluency, identifying areas where your child may need support, and develop a personalised plan to improve their articulation and communication.
Words and Talking: Language Delay
A language delay occurs when a child has difficulty understanding and/or using spoken language compared to their peers. Some signs of language delay include:
- Difficulty responding to language
- Challenges with understanding words or forming sentences
- Delayed first words or difficulty building vocabulary
Language delays can occur on their own or be associated with conditions like autism, Down syndrome, or hearing loss. Early identification is crucial in providing your child with the support they need to succeed.
Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Listening
Literacy encompasses reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, all of which are vital for success in school and life. We help children develop the building blocks of literacy, including:
- Understanding the relationship between letters and sounds
- Recognising words and developing vocabulary
- Building comprehension skills through listening and reading
Our goal is to strengthen your child’s literacy abilities, setting a foundation for academic achievement and lifelong learning.
Social Communication Skills
Social communication involves using language for different purposes, adapting language to various situations, and following the rules of conversation. Some children struggle with:
- Greeting, requesting, or informing appropriately
- Changing how they talk depending on the situation or listener
- Understanding non-verbal cues like body language or eye contact
Children with social communication disorders may need additional support to understand these social cues and interact effectively with others. Our speech pathologists provide individual and group therapy options to improve these essential skills.
Stuttering
Stuttering can impact the flow of speech, making it difficult for a child to communicate smoothly. Children may repeat sounds, prolong words, or experience speech blocks. Stuttering can vary in severity, and certain situations may make it more or less noticeable.
While some children may grow out of stuttering, early intervention is key. Our speech pathologists assess the frequency and type of stuttering and create a tailored management plan to help your child gain confidence in their speech and reduce disfluencies.
