Daily Living Skills Services
Occupational therapy interventions are designed to help individuals with functional limitations become as independent as possible in their daily lives. For individuals with mental health, cognitive, sensory, or physical challenges, our therapists at Ability Rehab focus on improving daily living skills and promoting autonomy through tailored strategies and interventions. Daily living skill development is a core part of physical disability rehabilitation, particularly for clients recovering from injury or managing chronic conditions.
Areas of Focus for Daily Living Skills
Occupational Therapists support individuals to complete tasks that they want to, need to, or are expected to do from day to day. This can include:
Self-care activities
Self-care activities are tasks such as toileting, dressing, brushing teeth, eating, and sleeping. Whilst many of these tasks may appear simple, they are actually a combination of complex singular tasks involving both cognitive, communication, emotional regulation, social and physical functions. An occupational therapist will help to assess each component of the tasks, identify barriers to engagement, develop intervention plans to overcome challenges, and work alongside the individual to build new skills.Productivity activities
Productivity activities are essential to help an individual feel fulfilled. For children, this may include activities typically completed at school or work such as drawing, writing, using scissors and engaging with peers. For adults, this may include completing household tasks, participating in community activities, pursuing paid or voluntary work, or returning to study.Leisure and Social activities
An Occupational Therapist can assist with helping to identify activities of interest, and exploring the specific steps to promote the gradual enhancement of the skills needed to perform these tasks. This may include support to locate leisure and social activities, travel training to and from the activity, skills to engage socially with others, and support to maintain relationships with others over a longer period. For children, this may include support within the childcare, kindergarten, or school setting, whilst for adults, this may include support within a range of community settings or day placement facilities.
Tailored Interventions for Independence
Each individual’s needs are unique, and our team at Ability Rehab develops personalised intervention plans to target the specific challenges they face. Our goal is to help individuals improve their skills in daily living activities and achieve greater independence in all areas of life.
