Physical Disability Services
At Ability Rehab, our Ivanhoe East-based occupational therapists provide disability rehabilitation for adults living with physical disability. Through comprehensive functional assessment, tailored intervention, and environmental adaptation, we support individuals to build independence, improve safety, and pursue the goals that matter most to them. As an NDIS-registered allied health clinic, our team works closely with clients and families across Ivanhoe, Heidelberg, Kew, Doncaster, Balwyn, Bundoora, and the surrounding north-eastern suburbs.
Our Approach to Disability Rehabilitation
Disability rehabilitation is a goal-directed, person-centred process focused on helping individuals maximise their functional independence and quality of life. At our Ivanhoe East clinic, our occupational therapists apply an evidence-based rehabilitation framework that considers the whole person — their physical capacity, home environment, support network, and personal goals. Every rehabilitation plan we develop is collaborative, practical, and reviewed regularly to ensure it continues to meet the individual’s changing needs.
Our disability rehabilitation services are available under NDIS funding, Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, and private referrals. We see clients at our Ivanhoe East clinic and, where clinically appropriate, conduct home and community-based sessions across surrounding suburbs.
Modifying the Environment
Environmental modifications are a key component in enhancing accessibility and safety for individuals with physical disabilities. These may include:
- Installing Grab Rails: Adding grab rails in showers, by entrances, or beside toilets to improve safety and ease of access.
- Ramps, Platform Steps, or Chair Lifts: Improving accessibility in and around the home by installing ramps or other mobility aids.
- Structural Modifications: Making complex adjustments in bathrooms and kitchens to enhance accessibility and functionality.
Prescribing Assistive Technology
Assistive technology can play a crucial role in enhancing independence. Our therapists may recommend:
- Raised Toilet Seats or Shower Chairs: To facilitate safer transfers and reduce fall risks.
- Wheelchairs, Mobility Scooters, or Hoists: To support mobility and independence around the home and community.
- Long-Handled Aids: To assist with personal care and dressing, such as reachers or long-handled sponges.
- Special Plates or Cutlery: To increase independence during mealtime.
- Pressure Cushions: To reduce the risk of pressure wounds and promote comfort.
Supporting Skill Development
Our team works with individuals to develop and strengthen the skills needed for daily living. This can include:
- Independent Living Skills: Learning essential skills for cooking, cleaning, and managing a household.
- Budgeting or Money Handling: Developing skills to manage finances independently.
- Alternative Dressing Techniques: Teaching alternative methods to dress with ease.
- Pain and Fatigue Management: Offering coping strategies and building routines to manage chronic pain and fatigue.
Developing Support and Intervention Plans
We provide comprehensive support and intervention plans, working collaboratively with the individual, their family, and their care team. These plans are designed to:
- Provide Recommendations: Offer specific advice to support current and future needs.
- Educate and Guide: Educate the individual and their support network on the best strategies for achieving goals.
- Advocate for Needs: Advocate for the individual’s access to services and support that enhance their independence.
Falls Prevention and Safety Education
Falls are a common concern for individuals with physical disabilities. We provide falls prevention education to reduce risks and ensure individuals can safely navigate their homes and communities.
