Sensory Assessment Services
Sensory processing difficulties can significantly impact an individual’s ability to participate in daily activities, often leading to challenges in performance and emotional regulation. At Ability Rehab, we offer comprehensive Sensory Assessments to help individuals identify and manage these difficulties, improving function and enhancing their overall well-being.
What is a Sensory Assessment?
A sensory assessment is a detailed evaluation that helps us understand how an individual perceives and responds to sensory stimuli in their environment. By identifying sensory preferences and sensitivities, we can develop personalised strategies that minimise negative responses and enhance daily functioning.
Our Approach to Sensory Assessment
At Ability Rehab, our therapists primarily use Pearson’s Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile to assess sensory processing. This evidence-based assessment tool covers six key sensory processing categories:
- Taste/Smell
- Movement
- Visual Processing
- Touch
- Activity Level
- Auditory Processing
The profile takes into account an individual’s neurological threshold and their behavioural response to different sensory stimuli. This assessment helps us identify patterns that may be contributing to barriers in functional performance and guides the development of therapeutic interventions tailored to each individual’s sensory needs.
How Sensory Assessment Supports Intervention
The insights gained from a sensory assessment are used to create targeted occupational therapy interventions. These interventions are designed to:
- Improve an individual’s ability to manage sensory stimuli
- Reduce stress or anxiety caused by overwhelming sensory inputs
- Enhance daily performance by aligning tasks and environments with the individual’s sensory preferences
- Build strategies for managing sensory overload or under-stimulation
By focusing on these areas, our therapists aim to improve not only functional performance but also the emotional and psychological well-being of the individual.
Maximising Performance with Personalised Therapy
The goal of our sensory interventions is to create a more comfortable and manageable environment for each individual. Whether it’s adjusting the physical environment, implementing sensory breaks, or working on desensitisation techniques, our tailored strategies are designed to maximise performance and help individuals engage more fully in their daily lives.
