Assistive technology is any item or piece of equipment that is used to increase, maintain, or improve function. Assessment for assistive technology involves assessing an individual’s performance and identifying environmental or functional that may be preventing an individual from completing a task safely or independently. When looking to introduce assistive technology, the occupational therapist must consider the individual’s needs, support the individual to acquire the device, fit or customize the device and provide training and technical support once the item is in place.
