Social Communication Therapy
Social communication involves using language in various ways to interact effectively with others. At Ability Rehab, our speech pathologists support individuals who have difficulties in social communication, helping them enhance their ability to engage in meaningful interactions.
Key Social Communication Skills
Social communication includes three major areas:
- Using language for different purposes: Greeting, informing, negotiating, requesting, demanding, questioning, and more.
- Adapting language to different listeners and situations: Speaking differently to a child than an adult, or using varied language at home compared to work. This also includes adjusting how much information to provide based on the listener’s knowledge.
- Following the rules of conversation and storytelling: Taking turns in conversation, staying on topic, using appropriate gestures, maintaining eye contact, and ensuring body language aligns with the conversation to make others feel comfortable.
Social Communication Challenges
Individuals with social communication difficulties may struggle with saying or doing the “right” thing in conversations or may use language in limited ways. These challenges can affect their ability to build relationships and interact confidently in social situations.
Personalised Social Communication Therapy
Our speech pathologists provide targeted interventions designed to improve social communication skills. These include:
- Understanding and using both verbal and non-verbal cues
- Taking turns in conversations and staying on topic
- Recognising social norms, tone of voice, and body language
- Role-playing and social skills training to practice real-life scenarios
Through personalised therapy, we teach strategies that enhance social interactions and help clients build stronger relationships, increase self-confidence, and engage more fully in community activities.
Our Experience at Ability Rehab
